  4.  Good day and a sincerely warm welcome to "ST NEWS" Volume 9 Issue 2, the 
  5. second 1994 issue,  the tenth Undead One and the 37th in total. This warm 
  6. welcome is probably quite literal, after all it's summer and I've been as 
  7. insane so as to finish this issue in it. Most likely you will have waited 
  8. until  after the summer before you read this,  but there might  still  be 
  9. some warmth around anyway.
  10.  I  think "ST NEWS" is once more filled with jolly nice things,  some  of 
  11. them  interesting  to all and some interesting to a select  few.  But  an 
  12. overall interesting issue nonetheless. If you disagree, you're welcome to 
  13. start  some  sort of polemic conversation  with  me  (or,  better,  write 
  14. some really interesting articles yourself)!

  93.  Now  you can see for yourself what old and recent stuff doesn't work  on 
  94. the Falcon and,  vastly more important,  what *does*.  It is probably the 
  95. most complete list of its kind,  and trustworthy too;  much of this stuff 
  96. is from my own experience.

  103.  I will be brief.  Just like the 36 prior issues,  "ST NEWS" is about  as 
  104. Public Domain as you can get.  Spread it,  copy it,  sell it (as CHEAP as 
  105. possible please),  I don't mind.  It is important that as many people  as 
  106. possible get this issue,  so give it to a friend for his/her birthday! In 
  107. case you're the owner of a Public Domain library, you are much encouraged 
  108. to include it in that.  I need NO royalties.  This is NO licenseware. You 
  109. can keep whatever profit you make yourself.
  110.  The disk format is:
  111.  
  112.  Tracks            : 0-80 (that's one extra)
  113.  Sectors per track : 11 (that's hyper-formatted)
  114.  Number of sides   : 2 (would have done 3 if only it were possible)
  115.  
  116.  You  can copy it with just about any modern disk copier  (though  Martin 
  117. Backschat's  "FastCopy"  would  be a most  excellent  choice  (free  plug 
  118. there)). And anyway, it's not *how* you copy it that's important, as long 
  119. as you *do* copy it, possible in the *largest* numbers!
  120.  Be  wise and steer clear of expensive PD libraries.  And please  send  a 
  121. donation now and again if you've enjoyed our efforts. I have received one 
  122. donation (hi Marinos!) in the last three years or something.

  125. = NOTES ABOUT COMPATIBILITY =============================================
  126.

  128. Atari (MEGA) ST(E): "ST NEWS" runs on all systems,  including those  with 
  129.                     512 Kb memory (though 1 Mb minimum would be nice, and 
  130.                     better).  Graphic cards are not supported. Please use 
  131.                     medium or high resolution only.
  132. Atari TT          : "ST  NEWS"  has been tested on a TT  and  works  when 
  133.                     launched from either ST medium or ST high resolution.
  134. Atari Falcon 030  : "ST NEWS" runs smoothly from any 80-column VGA/RGB/TV 
  135.                     resolution  with  the exception of "VGA  with  double 
  136.                     line on and 2 colours" or "TV/RGB non-interlaced with 
  137.                     2  colours" (in which cases it will  bomb).  Any  40-
  138.                     column   resolution  (including  ST  low   resolution 
  139.                     compatibility  mode) will cause all GEM and VDI  draw 
  140.                     commands  to  be  limited to the  left  half  of  the 
  141.                     screen.  Also, the file selector needed to specify an 
  142.                     ASCII/WP  file  to  be written  is  usually  coloured 
  143.                     wrongly  and drawn partly off the screen due  to  GEM 
  144.                     not being properly re-initialised. Any suggestions on 
  145.                     how to fix these problems?
  146.                     Keeping  [ALTERNATE]  pressed  during  booting  on  a 
  147.                     Falcon  with  VGA monitor connected  will  cause  the 
  148.                     program to use ST high resolution mode instead of  ST 
  149.                     medium  (among  other things,  this  slows  down  the 
  150.                     scroller).
  151.                     "ST  NEWS"  hasn't yet been tested on a  Falcon  with 
  152.                     SM124/5  monochrome monitor.  If you can  test  this, 
  153.                     please let me know the result.
  154. GEMulator         : "ST  NEWS"  works with it,  as long as you  have  the 
  155.                     music turned off.
  156. MultiTOS          : "ST NEWS" will not work with MultiTOS. Please disable 
  157.                     it.
  158. Warp 9            : Exiting "ST NEWS" may freeze the system with "Warp 9" 
  159.                     active.   This  can  be  fixed  by  adding  the  line 
  160.                     "ST_NEWS.PRG s0 b0 j0"   (turn  screen   accelerator, 
  161.                     mouse  block  and mouse jump off) in  the  "WARP.DAT" 
  162.                     automatic configuration file.
  163. BlowUp 030        : Exiting "ST NEWS" will cause a return to a  distorted 
  164.                     screen.  This is likely to happen with most  extended 
  165.                     screen resolution drivers, including "ScreenBlaster". 
  166.                     Please disable them. Does anyone know a solution?
  167. Disk drives       : There  are  a few (very few) disk drives  that  can't 
  168.                     handle 11 sectors per track.  I am very sorry,  but I 
  169.                     would  use a smaller format if I could.  There's  too 
  170.                     much  stuff I want to put in "ST NEWS" but not  quite 
  171.                     enough  simply  to  increase  the  frequency  of  its 
  172.                     appearance,  and  I *never* want to start  using  TWO 
  173.                     disks. Maybe, one day when everybody has HD drives, I 
  174.                     will switch to HD disks.
